Calving Jitters

Coming home.

Precalving jitters have finally set into my bones- while checking water in our calving lot yesterday, I felt this weird anxiety /excitement creep up my spine.

The complete silence in the corrals will soon be shattered by bawling cows, calves, and equipment.

New life will enter the world-some for a short time, hopefully most for a long while. Sleep will be lost, tears will be shed, sweat will roll, curse words will be shouted and mumbled, and I will, inevitably, trip over a frozen pile of something unmentionable more than once.

It's night checks and long days, freezing to the bone and sweating in coveralls. It's chasing pairs and milking a few ornery cows, falling into bed and wanting to shoot the alarm clock. It's life and death and love and all the feelings rolled into one. It's spring storms, vet supplies, pitchforks, manual labor, and leaning on one another to make it through.

Calving season is a reminder that even with all the things happening in this world, babies and mommas continue to prove Mother Nature rules all.

❤️ Richelle
